About William Cowper
William Cowper (1731-1800) was an English poet and hymnodist. He was born in Great Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, the son of the rector of the parish. Cowper was a shy and sensitive child, and he suffered from bouts of depression throughout his life. He was educated at Westminster School and Trinity College, Cambridge, but he did not complete his degree. After leaving Cambridge, Cowper worked as a lawyer, but he found the work uncongenial. He resigned his position in 1763 and moved to Huntingdon, where he lived with his cousin, the Reverend Morley Unwin.
Cowper began writing poetry in his early twenties, but he did not publish anything until 1782, when his first volume of poems, Poems, was published. This was followed by The Task in 1785, which was a great success. Cowper's poetry is characterized by its simplicity, sincerity, and humor. He wrote about everyday life and the natural world, and he often expressed his Christian faith in his poems.
Cowper died in East Dereham, Norfolk, in 1800. He is buried in the parish church of St. Nicholas.
