Ludovico Ariosto (1474-1533) was an Italian poet, courtier, and diplomat. He is best known for his epic poem Orlando Furioso, which is considered one of the masterpieces of Italian literature. Ariosto was born in Reggio Emilia, Italy, and studied at the University of Ferrara. He began writing poetry at a young age, and his early works were influenced by the Petrarchan tradition. In 1503, Ariosto entered the service of the Este family, the ruling family of Ferrara. He held various positions in the Este court, including governor of Garfagnana and ambassador to the papal court. While in the service of the Este family, Ariosto continued to write poetry, and he published Orlando Furioso in 1516. The poem was a huge success, and it was soon translated into several languages. Ariosto continued to write poetry until his death in 1533.
