Cinepoems And Others (NYRB Poets)
An engaging essay on the poets published by the New York Review of Books, with close readings of their work
Since its founding in 1963, the New York Review of Books (NYRB) has published some of the most important and influential poets of our time. These poets, who include W.H. Auden, Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Lowell, and John Ashbery, have helped to shape the course of American poetry, and their work continues to be read and studied by readers around the world.
In recent years, the NYRB has published a number of anthologies of poetry, including The Collected Poems of W.H. Auden (2017),The Collected Poems of Elizabeth Bishop (2018),and The Collected Poems of Robert Lowell (2019). These anthologies have been praised for their comprehensiveness and their insightful s, which provide valuable context for the poets' work.
In addition to these anthologies, the NYRB has also published a number of individual collections of poetry by contemporary poets, including The Dream Thieves by Louise GlĂŒck (2006),The Wild Fox of Yemen by Threa Almontaser (2008),and The Great Cat by Amy Gerstler (2015). These collections have helped to introduce new voices to the world of poetry, and they have established the NYRB as a major publisher of contemporary poetry.

The poets published by the NYRB are as diverse as the magazine itself. They come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, and they write in a wide range of styles. However, they share a common commitment to excellence in writing, and their work is characterized by its intelligence, its wit, and its emotional depth.
In this essay, I will discuss the work of three of the most important poets published by the NYRB: W.H. Auden, Elizabeth Bishop, and Robert Lowell. I will begin by providing a brief overview of each poet's life and work, and then I will offer a close reading of one of their poems.
W.H. Auden
W.H. Auden was born in York, England, in 1907. He studied at Oxford University, where he began writing poetry. In 1939, he moved to the United States, where he became a citizen in 1946. He taught at several universities, including the University of Michigan, the University of California, Berkeley, and the New School for Social Research. He died in New York City in 1973.
Auden was one of the most prolific and influential poets of the 20th century. He wrote over 600 poems, as well as several plays, librettos, and essays. His work is characterized by its intelligence, its wit, and its emotional depth. He was a master of form, and his poems are often written in traditional meters and rhyme schemes. However, he was also a modernist, and his work is often characterized by its experimental use of language and imagery.
One of Auden's most famous poems is "MusĂ©e des Beaux Arts." The poem is set in a museum, and it describes a painting of a landscape with a group of people in the foreground. The painting is serene andçŸăă, but the poem suggests that there is something sinister lurking beneath the surface. The poem ends with the following lines:
> About suffering they were never wrong, > The Old Masters: how well they understood > Its human position
